Yes! Word is getting out on BPA and Breast Cancer

Because BPA mimics estrogen which is a known contributor to breast cancer, scientists are studying a likely link between beast cancer and BPA.  A new study out of Tufts University shows a connection between mammary cancer and BPA in rats.  Another recent study on rhesus monkeys shows similar results of a higher susceptibility to mammary cancer because of changes in the mammary glands after exposure to BPA.  A September report from the advocacy group Breast Cancer Fund compiles data from 60 different studies linking BPA to breast cancer.

It’s time for regulation of BPA and so many other chemicals, for our health, our children’s health and the health of our planet.


Forget about the Dryer


I recently received an energy analysis on my home. The visual diagram scared me at first. The energy saving target line was green, (of course). The line signifying my energy use was yellow, and it fell far below the green line.  Turns out, that’s a really good thing.

I’m conservative with energy, having lived off-grid with solar-power and water catchment and having realized just how precious it all is, but, I’m not austere.  I turn on the heat when I’m too cold or turn on the air if it’s too hot.

I think one of the biggest contributors to my savings on energy costs is that I don’t use the dryer much anymore.

This is new for me. We recently moved into a neighborhood where the matriarchy of the home across the street everyday faithfully hangs the clothes for the three generations that live in her home.  Everyday a new set of colorful arms and legs, sheets, baby blankets and undergarments wave and undulate. I am always struck by the beauty and simplicity of this circus-like spectacle with it’s bright stripes and patterns.

So, I resolved to try it myself. What a strange pleasure. Not I not only enjoy the view, I also enjoy the savings and they are significant!

And you thought it was only the supersized diet and video games that were responsible for making out children so large today. Well, there might be a lot more to it than that.  BPA or Bisphenol A has been linked with childhood obesity. BPA is found in everything from cans, to plastics, to ATM and grocery receipts. Ninety percent of us have BPA in our bodies.

Because BPA mimics estrogen it is an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  A recent study showed a direct correlation between children with higher levels of BPA and higher BMI.

Why Care about BPA?

So, why should we care about BPA?

BPA is a key ingredient in polycarbonate plastics…. It is found in many products in our modern world.  It is estimated that more than 90% of all people have BPA in their body. Much research has been performed on animals showing that BPA contributes to diseases such as diabetes and cancers.  BPA mimics estrogen in the body and can lead to abnormal development of the prostate gland, mammary glands, and reduced production of sperm count and chromosomal changes in the egg. There has been much debate over the subject-  slowly but surely, the research is pointing us away from BPA.

Did you know that while BPA (bisphenol A) has been removed from many infant and child products, it is still found in many food storage containers, plastic bottles, receipt tape and as an epoxy resin found in the lining of many metal food containers?  The FDA has been reviewing its use for years; the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences advises against heating plastics in the microwave or dishwasher because of the risk of BPA leaching into foods. Heat breaks down plastics, allowing BPA to be released.  BPA is  water soluble, which makes it particularly dangerous in receipt paper, because it is so easily transferred from the paper through the skin. Additionally the paper winds up in the recycling chain and returns in our paper products like toilet-paper,  and many other seemingly innocuous products.
